In times long long ago farmers would end the harvest season gathering berries and nuts from the hedgerows. They soon discovered that the fruit of the Blackthorn Bush (Sloe Berries) was inedible. A eureka moment came later when it was discovered that by soaking the Blackthorn fruit in gin and adding sugar a very agreeable drink was produced. Sloe Gin was born! Plymouth Sloe Gin is based on an 1883 recipe and has since become an important part in various classic cocktails notably the Sloe Gin fizz. The making of fruit gins is a long tradition in the British countryside and Plymouth Gin keeps true to a unique 1883 recipe. Sloe berries are slowly and gently steeped in Plymouth Gin soft pure Dartmoor water and a small amount of sugar for approximately 4 months. The sugar levels are kept low to allow the full flavour of the berries to shine and allow the dry acidity of the fruit to be an important part of the taste. The result is an entirely natural product with no added flavourings or colourings. Sloe Gin has long been enjoyed as a winter warmer in the countryside. Sloe Gin has a rich red colour which is the result of steeping the finest sloe berries in high strength Plymouth Gin and soft Dartmoor water. The result is a smooth liqueur taste with a beautiful balance between sweet and bitter fruit flavours and a hint of almonds from the stone of the fruit. It is deep red. On the nose there is the clear character of mellow sloe berries fruity with nots of sweet cherry and a slight accent of almonds. On the palate it is smooth and full bodied with a balance of sweet and dry with a long fresh and fruity finish.
