Country:  New Zealand
Region:  Marlborough

Grape varieites:  Pinot Gris

About:  Opawa in Maori means Smoky River. The vineyard is situated on the historic Opawa river bed which is full of endangered birdlife and wetland animals. The Opawa river was fed from Wairau river. As a result of agricultural development some years ago the river course was redirected and Opawa was left to dry. The stony soils left behind are great for grape vines and not much else. The winery is committed to farming with minimal intervention to preserve the delicate eco system that remains. The land was purchased by Nautilus in 2001 and 2003, and the wines are
made in the Nautilus winery in Marlborough.

Marlborough on the Northeastern corner of South Island is the best known wine region for New Zealand famed for many years for Sauvignon Blanc. However in recent years many wineries have diversified to offer a more extensive range. Nautilus have always been unique in their approach and have not only made original wines, but those considered of high quality. The region is sheltered from Westerly winds and has a cool maritime climate. Like Nelson, it shares very long sunshine hours, cool nights and sunny days. Opawa Vineyards are frost free and allows early ripening, producing fruity and fragrant wines.

Tasting Notes:  Pale lemon in colour with fragrant aromas of honeysuckle, peach, apricots and spices. On the palate white peaches and subtle nutty characters, hints of citrus. The ripe fruits allow a creamy sensation and mouthfeel, whilst the finish remains textured and crisp. A versatile wine and is great with spicy food.
