The Ego Bodegas Winery is the home of our beautiful selection of El Goru wines. Imported into the UK directly by ourselves there is no where else in the country you can find them!
Santos Ortiz and Ioana Paunescu have owned the vineyard, set in the beautiful landscape of Jumilla in Southeast Spain, since 2011. Their aim is to make wines that don't take over, but complement whatever it is you are doing.
Here they have stuck to producing mainly the native grapes of the region - Monastrell (or Mouvedre/Mataro) which they then blend with small amounts of Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon to create an award winning range of wines.
They also have a Chardonnay blend and a Rose Grenache, both stunning additions to enhance the range and both out for tasting on the 5th March.
Jumilla and the Monastrell Grape
Jumilla is the perfect environment for Monastrell grapes to thrive in - producing top quality noble grapes. The region is dominated by large areas of plains and mountains and is one of the oldest wine making regions in Spain.
The climate is hot and sunny in the summer and very cold in the winter, there is little rain, intensifying the sugar within the grapes. When it does fall the rain is torrential, not ideal for most grape growing, but Monastrell grapes love it!
Monastrell grapes are small with reasonably thick skins, they grow in tight bunches and are high in sugar. This allows for only a small ripening window during which to pick so all of the Ego Bodegas grapes are picked by hand and then the best ones are selected for use.
Monastrell grapes are full bodied in flavour, full of soft red fruits such as raspberries, strawberries, plums and cherries, it has some slight savoury, earthy notes to it that can turn to spice, such as cinnamon or black pepper with age plus a little fresh sweetness like vanilla, parma violet or rose.
They blend very well with Syrah and the fruitiness is often intensified by blending with a little Petit Verdot.
These truly are beautiful wines, not too expensive and great all year round, complementing red and white meats or fish, pasta dishes, Mediterranean salads and cheeses.
