Anthony's Wine of the Week!! - 9th February
Share
This week, Anthony, part of our top Petersfield team has chosen a belter for our Top Tipple feature!!
Simonsig Estate, 'The Garland' Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, from Stellenbosch is Anthony's Top Tip this week:
Tasting Notes -Rich, ripe black fruits layered with sweet spices and backed up by soft tannins. Unctuous and bold with a long finish.
Why is it so good?
I first had the opportunity to try this wine several years ago. 2015 was an excellent year for viticulture across the western cape, with a long, dry growing season (that would unfortunately continue for several years and become a drought) and winds perfect for both ripening and crop health.
Simonsig were excited to be producing only the second vintage in four years of their top wine, but when I first had the opportunity to try the wine several years ago it was clearly too young to be enjoyed properly. While there was plenty of dark fruit and ripe tannin, it was dense and nothing like the fantastically expressive wine it has now become.
What should you eat with it?
A beef ribeye steak of course! While this is a massive, hefty "new" world Cabernet Sauvignon, the soft character of the tannins mean it would accommodate a lighter cut like fillet. Other strongly flavoured foods like cheddar-esque semi-hard cheeses with black olives would go nicely.
A bit about Anthony Aquing....
Anthony is part of our top Petersfield Shop Team!
The seed of interest I had in wine during my twenties was watered by the formal teaching I received whilst working in a local club.
The best bit about wine is that the more you learn and the more you try, the more interesting the topic becomes. I enjoyed it so much I signed up for more!
Fast forward a few years and I got my first wine job working for an award winning London wine company that specialised in English wine.
Although an incredibly fun, fast-paced place to work, the commuting was neither of those things, so in 2016 I got a job here in the Petersfield shop working for The General Wine Company.
