The last in a series of five volcanic landslides created a small sliver of land in Napa Valley and gifted it with the rare combination of attributes necessary to grow high quality Bordeaux grape varietals. Measuring only one mile wide and one and one half miles long, this strip of land winds across the valley floor in the Oakville appellation, through the 55 acre Rudd Oakville Estate Vineyard, and continues north only one-half additional mile. Leslie Rudd was fortunate to become steward of a portion of this land in 1996. His reverence for ensuring that the land achieves its full potential is shared by every Rudd employee and underlies every action we take in the fields as well in the cellar. His vision for the winery was founded upon a passion for the land and a clear intent to build a multi-generational winery with a legacy of excellence. Walk with dreamers, the believers, the courageous, the cheerful, the planners, the doers, the successful people with their heads in the clouds and their feet on the ground. Let their spirit ignite a fire within you and leave this world better than when you found it. - Wilfred Peterson This quote from Wilfred Peterson is one of Leslies favorites. It summarizes many of the personal beliefs that have guided his decision-making. Taught the importance of both hard work and customer focus by his parents, Leslie built on this strong foundation, adding excellence, courage, innovation, passion and creativity, and philanthropy to his personal list of success factors. Under the umbrella of these values is his conviction that each generation should leave the company, and more importantly, the world, better off than how they found it. Not one to merely talk the talk, the Rudd Foundation has played a major role in local and national charitable endeavors. Dense color, with a dark, purple hue suggesting its weight and vibrant acidity. On the nose it offers fresh, dark fruit- blackberries, cassis as well as the aromatics we have come to recognize from the Oakville Estate: the characteristic warm tobacco accompanied by a dry, almost ashy not of rosemary that speaks of the near perfect growing season. The finish leaves a subtle exotic not reminiscent of sandalwood. The ripe vintage is characterized by a warm, generous evolution balanced with mineral freshness. With a long persistence in mouth, the 2012 offers rich density, ripe tannins and balanced concentration.
