About: Sam Neill and his family run this fun and interesting winery with a passion for Pinot Noir and Riesling. They pride themselves on organic and quality production of serious wines without being too serious. With four organic vineyards in Central Otago they are able to select grapes in different environments to produce interesting wines. Their first vintage was produced in 1997 from Gibbston Valley and their most recent acquisition in 2013, a vineyard on the Felton Road in Bannockburn.
Central Otago is the most Southerly wine producing region in the world. It is closer to the South Pole than anywhere else and it shouldn’t be possible to grow grapes in the region except for some geographical factors that give it a unique micro climate. Mountains surround the region in a horseshoe shape with vineyards North facing and exceptionally long sunny days.
Tasting Notes: Organically grown with a picture of Sam Neill’s Grandfather on the label, who was a wine merchant. This flexible and interesting Riesling is produced from two small blocks on the Two Paddocks home vineyard. An off dry Riesling with aromas of wild flowers, nectarine and lime lead to a textured and fresh mouthful. A strong mineral and vibrant finish.
