2012 Vintage:  The 2012 vintage for Bordeaux was small and difficult at times, but not without moments of greatness.  Spring was tricky, with damp conditions – April was extraordinarily wet – delaying both budburst and flowering, the latter finally occurred in June. The summer finally brought better weather, but a hot, dry August led to oppressive heat and drought.

For Cabernet Sauvignon being a later-ripening variety, harvesting was slightly tricky. Early October rains created humid conditions, which prompted outbreaks of both grey rot and botrytis. This meant pickers were having to dodge both wet conditions to bring in the best of the grapes.  A mixed bag this harvest.

Tasting notes:   One might have expected Potensac to have produced an intimidating wine in this fine vintage, but it’s actually quite accessible and fluid. The nose is sweet and ripe, with elegant cherry and blackcurrant aromas.  This is medium bodied and the tannins are firm and very silky but ripe, giving grip, but there’s complexity with notes of mint, cedar, fennel and spice too. Assertive and long.  More concentrated than many but balanced by notable acidity.
