The Times this weekend will be extolling the wonderous vinous virtues of the McHenry Hohnen ‘Rocky Road’ Zinfandel – from one of the General Wine Company’s most popular producers.

Jane MacQuitty agrees unreservedly with the General Wine Company about this wine and will report glowingly about the intense blackberries, raisins, black olives and the nestle of cranberry that jumps from the glass.

Indeed, the man himself, David Hohnen, was on hand at our Liphook Wine Fair in September 2011, to pour his wines and chat to guests about the numerous award winning and boutique wines from Margaret River. It is rare to find good Zinfandel from Australia, but when planted on ironstone gravels and under the watchful eye of David, the ‘Rocky Road’ is a masterpiece.

This 'Pure Spirit' vodka is a quadruple-distilled vodka made with pure Newfoundland water and triple filtered through Herkimer diamonds. The stunning crystal skull bottle was designed by John Alexander and made by Bruni Glass in Milano Italy.

About Crystal Head Vodka

Thousands of years ago, thirteen crystal heads were scattered across the earth - and they are greater and more powerful than anything we have the ability to manufacture today. Their workmanship is perfect: they contain no tool marks and have been cut against the natural axis of the crystal, defying the laws of physics. Some say they are artifacts from the lost civilization of Atlantis, some say they date back to the Mayans, still others say they were created by a higher intelligence.

Brought together, the Crystal Heads are said to contain vast knowledge and enlightenment capable of unlocking our most enigmatic ancient mysteries. Alone, each is believed to house radiant psychic energy, which has magical powers and healing properties.

My objective was to make traditional vodka using one of the planet’s cleanest, sweetest water sources. We selected the pure glacial aquifers of Newfoundland, Canada. The mash is distilled only 4 times so as not to diminish taste. The liquid is then filtered 3 times through charcoal and then poured 3 times through Herkimer semi-precious crystals. The smoothness you experience is achieved not by what we add to the vodka but rather what we do NOT add. Unlike many vodkas Crystal Head does not use glycol, citrus oil or raw sugar. The result, contained in the skull bottle designed by world renowned artist John Alexander is a naturally smooth premium beverage. Manufactured in the beautiful province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Crystal Head Vodka, Pure Spirit, has been awarded a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition for 2011. This means 30 judges voted unanimously for our vodka as the best tasting out of 200 brands. Tasting notes are “sweet, vanilla, dry, crisp with a kick of heat off the finish.”

OLD DICK Dick Olding brewed in Southwick Brewhouse from 1906 to 1957, retiring at the ripe old age of 81. He died soon after, taking his recipes with him, but with its old English hops and Southwick malted barley, we are sure that ‘Old Dick’ would approve this way of being remembered.

LIBERATION In 1944 at Southwick House, Generals Eisenhower and Montgomery launched Operation Overlord resulting in the liberation of France. Liberation Ale honours all the members of the Allied Forces who fought so fearlessly to gain victory and freedom.

PALMERSTON'S FOLLY named after the Portsdown Hill forts. Ironically, not a single gun was ever fired from any of these hill forts in anger. By the time construction of the forts was finally completed in 1868, France clearly had no intentions of making war on Britain and the forts had only limited strategic use. Ever since then this massive scheme of fortifications has become known as "Palmerston's Folly."

Hand malting using traditional methods in the historic Warminster Maltings guarantees Suthwyk Ales the finest malt which is the foundation of our light golden ales. In the final brewing, the malt is combined with farm selected hops ensuring a beer that is synonymous with the excellence that Suthwyk Ales has set out to achieve.

SKEW SUNSHINE ALE (4.6% ABV) is brewed using a combination of lightly malted SUTHWYK barley and ‘Challenger’ hops to create a fresh, straw coloured ale with a citrus flavour and a light bitterness.

It appeals to young and old, men or women alike and can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Many of our wine producers and agents will be manning the stands eager to top up your glasses and talk you through their vinous wonders.

This year however, we are delighted to offer two tasting masterclasses which will no doubt add a new dynamic to proceedings.

There will be a Single Malt Whisky session and also a tutored tasting from David Hohnen, the legendary founder of the famous Cloudy Bay, on ‘The Magic of Margaret River’.

Places are filling up for these sessions, so pre-ordering your seats is highly recommended. Entry is a mere £2.50 for the day, and you can keep the glass as well! Doors will be open from 11am, and Tim and the team very much look forward to welcoming you all!

email our Liphook shop to confirm your place
liphookshop@thegeneralwine.co.uk
